The 2026 Census of Population and Census of Agriculture are officially underway! Collection begins today, May 4, 2026, with Census Day set for May 12, 2026.

The census is one of Canada’s most important sources of community data. It provides a detailed, reliable statistical portrait of people, households, families, communities and the agricultural sector across the country. This information helps governments, community organizations, businesses and researchers plan services, understand local change, and make evidence-based decisions in areas such as housing, transportation, health care, education, employment and community development.

For Community Data Program members, census data are especially important. They provide the foundation for local and regional analysis, support comparisons across communities, and help members better understand the needs and characteristics of the populations they serve.
